Our programme looks at the life and times of Heinrich Heine including his own sardonic quotations and musical settings of his poems. Heine, with Goethe and Schiller, ranks amongst the foremost of writers in the German language. However, because of his Jewish origin, the Nazi regime suppressed Heine’s poetry and writings. His books were amongst those burned in 1933 in Berlin.

The programme will explore Heine’s life and work through readings and songs set to his poems by Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn and Brahms.
