Most people think of Baron Edmond de Rothschild as a banker, a proud Frenchman as a great benefactor to the early Zionist settings in Palestine. However he had a secret passion for the arts and bequeathed some 43,000 works of art to the Louvre. He left portfolios that reflected his own taste and that of his son James. When in 1922 James inherited Waddesdon Manor he brought drawings and paintings to the house. 75 of these works are displayed at the Wallace Collection in Manchester Square, London and include artists such as Boucher, Lancre Fragonard and costume drawings by Leon Bakst, which include a series of panels for Ballet Russe.
